Digi Postpaid 2021: 6 things you need to know

$

0

Digi has recently introduced its new postpaid lineup for 2021 which promises to offer simplicity and greater value as Malaysia recovers from the current pandemic. The new plans start from RM40/month and it offer uncapped high-speed data with no complicated quota splits.

Straightforward base plans with unlimited calls

The base Digi Postpaid 40 costs RM40 per month and it comes with 10GB of quota. If you need more, you can step up to Postpaid 60 with 25GB, Postpaid 90 with 50GB or Postpaid 120 with 65GB. The highest option is Postpaid 150 that comes with 85GB, and this appears to be a replacement for Digi Infinite 150 when you include the extra add-on that we will explain later. All 5 plans come with unlimited calls to all networks in Malaysia.

Complimentary add-ons if you sign a contract

To get more value, subscribers can enjoy one extra add-on if they sign up with a 12-month contract. Depending on the plan, you can choose to get discounted or free extra data, monthly rebates for Play Store, App Store or EasyAdd or a free 50GB Mobile broadband SIM. There’s also the option to add Rome Like Home for free if you’re on the higher tier plans.

However, do note that you can only select one add-on at any given time during the contract period. If you’re planning to get a device on contract, that would also be considered as an add-on. This means you can’t enjoy the above mentioned perks while getting a brand new phone. All PhoneFreedom 365 contracts on Digi are tied to a 24-month duration.

If you’re going for the entry-level Postpaid 40, the only add-on available is to get extra 5GB for RM5/month (Normal: RM10/month). Meanwhile, the next Postpaid 60 plan allows you to get 10GB for RM10/month (Normal: RM15/month), the option to get RM5/month rebate for Play Store, App Store and EasyAdd, or get Roam Like Home for RM28/month (Normal: RM35/month).

For the non-phone add-ons, you can cancel early before the 12-month contract is up but you’ll need to pay a flat penalty fee of RM30.

Get unlimited data on Postpaid 150 but there’s a catch

Among all the new postpaid plans, Postpaid 150 has the most interesting add-on option. By going for a 12-month contract, users can enjoy unlimited data for free which also comes with unlimited hotspot. Now, this looks similar to the Digi Postpaid Infinite 150 that appears to be discontinued. However, do note that the unlimited hotspot has a speed cap of 10Mbps and there’s an FUP of 999GB per month.

According to the T&C, you can only connect up to 3 devices for hotspot usage. This is something to take note for those who intend to use it as a home broadband solution.

Extra rebate for Fibre or Mobile Broadband

If you subscribe to Digi Postpaid 60 and above, you can get extra monthly rebate if you sign up for fibre or mobile broadband. If you sign up with a fibre broadband plan, you’ll get a rebate of RM15/month on Postpaid 60 and RM30/month on Postpaid 90 and above. For mobile broadband, you’ll get a rebate of RM10/month for all four plans.

Add supplementary lines from RM20/month

Digi also offers 50% off for all supplementary lines and you can share data from the principal line. The Family 40 plan with 10GB data costs RM20/month while the Family 60 plan with 25GB data costs RM30/month. Meanwhile, the highest Family 90 with 50GB data costs RM45/month.

Take note that Family 60 is only offered for Postpaid 60 and above, while Family 90 is available only for Postpaid 90 and above. If you plan on getting a PhoneFreedom 365 bundle on the supplementary line, it’s only available on Family 90.

RM10/month for data-only Gadget SIM

Digi also offers a Gadget SIM if you just need a spare data-only SIM for your tablet or wearable device. It costs RM10/month and it will utilise the data quota from your principal line. This data SIM is offered on Postpaid 60 and above.

At first glance, the new postpaid offering looks complicated with the various add-ons. However, if you take a step by step approach by selecting the base, followed by choosing the add-ons that you want, it’s almost like ordering economy rice or customising a Poke Bowl.

For more info, you can check out Digi’s Postpaid page.

If you’re looking for a more affordable plan, it appears that Digi Postpaid 38 and Postpaid 58 are still available. These plans are more complicated as it offers loyalty data bonuses which grows every 6 months until your 25th month tenure.

If you need unlimited data for you and your family, Maxis has introduced its new Family Plan which comes with 4 postpaid lines and 1 home broadband from RM299. For your home, you can get either fibre or a fixed 4G powered broadband.

For RM299 a month, you’ll get four postpaid lines that come with unlimited data, calls and SMS. The price includes 30Mbps fibre broadband with backup 4G which kicks in when your fibre line goes down. If you’re out of fibre coverage, you can opt for their Home 4G WiFi solution for the same price.

If you need new phones, the plan also allows you to add up to four devices on Maxis Zerolution from RM19 per mobile line.

Compare this to the current MaxisOne Prime offering, you would save RM92/month with the same 4 postpaid lines and 30Mbps fibre broadband combo (RM89 for fibre + RM158 for MaxisOne 158 + RM48 x 3 Share Lines = RM391/month). This is great if you have a family of four and everyone needs unlimited calls, SMS and data for their mobile devices. Unfortunately, there’s no option to reduce the number of supplementary lines.

Existing Maxis Postpaid and Broadband customers can switch to this new family plan but according to the FAQ, you’ll need to refresh your contract. If you have an existing device contract, you’ll need to terminate that first which will incur an early termination fee.

Opensignal: Malaysia’s mobile data usage increased by 35.2%, highest growth among 5 SEA countries

The current COVID-19 pandemic and the implementation of lockdowns have increased data usage as most people are required to work or learn from home. According to Opensignal’s latest report, Malaysia has come up on top for having the highest growth in mobile data consumption year-on-year from 2020 to 2021.

As shown in the chart above using January 2020 as the baseline, average consumption in Malaysia has increased to 14.6% in March and 30.7% in April 2020. As a comparison, other ASEAN countries such as Indonesia, Thailand and Cambodia had reported 14-20% growth in the same period versus January 2020.

Interestingly, mobile data consumption in Singapore had dropped by approximately 22%. This tells us most Singaporeans would probably rely on their fixed broadband service instead of their mobile data during their lockdown period.

According to Opensignal, Malaysia’s data consumption has maintained its momentum by showing 15%-30% increase per month which is higher than Indonesia, Singapore and Thailand across all months. While the jump between Jan 2019 to Jan 2020 is lower at 16.3%, the Year-on-Year (YoY) increase from Jan 2020 to Jan 2021 is significantly higher at 35.2%. Indonesia follows closely with 23.3% YoY for the same period, followed by Cambodia at 16.9% and Thailand at 15.2%.

In actual numbers, Malaysia’s average data consumption recorded was 19.5GB in January 2020 and it increased to 26.4GB in January 2021. Opensignal had previously released a report which indicated that the top telcos in Malaysia were struggling to keep up with demand during the MCO.

To assist Malaysians with their connectivity needs, most telcos had offered free 1GB of data daily for productivity use. This initiative has been extended until 31st July 2021. To boost existing mobile coverage, the government has kicked off its JENDELA program which focuses on improving existing 4G coverage through fiberisation and upgrade of existing sites. T

o free up valuable spectrum for 4G use, the government also targets to shutdown 3G by the end of this year. The local telcos are currently running programs to convert 3G phone users to newer 4G devices.

3G Sunset: Unifi Mobile users might be able to roam on Celcom’s 4G network soon

$

Under the JENDELA program, Malaysia aims to shut down 3G networks by the end of this year. While most telcos are gradually switching customers to 4G devices and upgrading the remaining 3G sites to 4G, Unifi Mobile is currently in a unique situation.

Unifi Mobile doesn’t have a 3G network and their current 4G LTE coverage is still not as extensive as its competitors. To provide nationwide coverage, TM currently has 3G domestic roaming with Celcom to cover areas that don’t have 4G coverage. So what happens when Celcom shuts down their 3G sites?

When asked about TM’s plans for 3G sunset, TM Group CEO Imri Mokhtar said during a recent JENDELA meeting that they are working closely with their partner Celcom to ensure their Unifi Mobile customers are covered. Although he didn’t mention it specifically, it is a high possibility that TM might tap on Celcom’s 4G network after 3G sunset.

Two years ago, TM had signed an agreement whereby Celcom will provide TM with 4G domestic roaming and (Multi-Operator Core Network) services for a period of 3 years. However, this approach might present a tricky situation for its current postpaid and prepaid plans.

Unifi to revise data offering?

Unless you’re on the Unifi Mobile 99 plan with unlimited data, most of the postpaid and prepaid options come with a data quota split between 4G and 4G/3G. Obviously, you get more data if you’re on TM’s 4G network and if you do roam onto Celcom, you will utilise a separate bucket for it. Even the current RM35 monthly unlimited plan for #Bebas Prepaid is only applicable for LTE data.

If Unifi Mobile users are allowed to roam onto Celcom’s 4G network, it would be harder for users to know whether they are on a home or domestic roaming network. It would be better for consumers if TM revises its Unifi Mobile plans and do away with the complicated data split. With less than 6 months left in the year, we expect TM to provide more details closer to the 3G shutdown.

To migrate users who are still using 3G or non-VOLTE devices, Unifi is running a campaign where you can get a RM50 Lazada voucher to buy a new 4G phone. TM has sent an EDM to the first 660 selected customers and they can redeem the RM50 voucher by filling up a form. This campaign is running from 24th June until 31st December 2021.

Malaysia’s 3G shutdown has a major hurdle and it has nothing to do with 4G device or coverage

Under the current JENDELA plan, Malaysia aims to shut down 3G networks by the end of this year to free up the 900MHz and 2100MHz spectrum for 4G use. All telcos and the MCMC have been running campaigns to educate users who are still using their 3G devices to make the switch to 4G.

Mobile experience analytics company Opensignal has released a report to provide some insights into why some 3G-only users have never connected to 4G. Turns out, there’s a huge portion of 3G users that have the right device and 4G coverage, but are still stuck on 3G.

Why are users not connected to 4G?

According to Opensignal’s data collected between 1st April to 29th June 2021, 12% of 3G-only users don’t own a 4G device and 5.6% of users have a 4G device but they are not covered by a 4G network. Meanwhile, there are 0.5% of 3G-only users without a 4G device and are out of 4G coverage.

The report states that a staggering 81.9% of 3G-only users actually have a 4G-capable phone and are residing in 4G-covered areas. Opensignal has confirmed that their location has coverage as there are other users of the same network that are connected to 4G in the same area.

4G ready but only connected to 3G networks

So why are these 4G-ready users still stuck on 3G? Opensignal has provided a couple of possible reasons which may include using legacy plans that don’t offer 4G or they might have disabled 4G on their phone’s settings.

From what we know, telcos usually offer 4G by default to all subscribers regardless if they are on old or newer plans. There is a high possibility that these customers are still using an old SIM which doesn’t have access to 4G. Even if they have the latest smartphones, they would need to swap their SIM card for a new replacement that can access 4G.

As mentioned by Opensignal, disabling 4G on the phone could be a probable reason as some users may think that setting the phones to 3G-only can improve battery life. With the advancements of 4G technologies including new chipsets and network equipment, connecting to 4G is much more power-efficient than before.

3G obviously provides a worse experience

Obviously, users who are still stuck on 3G would have a far worse mobile experience. Not only they would have significantly slower download speeds compared to 4G, but they would also have lower coverage availability since 3G base stations are gradually being shut down and replaced with 4G coverage.

From the latest findings, 4G coverage isn’t much of an issue right now but it’s all about getting users to have the right subscription (SIM card) and settings to access the faster network. Opensignal said there’s a clear opportunity for MCMC and telcos to evangelise the benefits of 4G mobile experience by encouraging them to switch to a 4G SIM.

Besides having faster mobile data speeds, these users can also enjoy better voice calls with VoLTE (Voice over LTE). At the moment, not all telcos have enabled VoLTE to all subscriptions. Without VoLTE, 4G devices would have to connect to a slower 2G network in order to make or receive voice calls.
