Is U Mobile Giler Unlimited GX68 postpaid plan capped at 50GB?

$
0
0

U Mobile had recently introduced its Giler Unlimited GX68 postpaid plan that offers unlimited data at full speeds for RM68/month. As a comparison, the older GX50 plan is cheaper at RM50/month but the speeds are capped at 5Mbps. Similar to the GX50 postpaid plan, the GX68 also comes with unlimited calls to all networks and 5GB of hotspot data.

Recently, a Facebook post had called for a boycott of U Mobile claiming that the GX68 plan is misleading. It claims that the unlimited postpaid plan actually comes with a 50GB quota and it included what appears to be a screencap of an internal system that shows 51,200MB for the Unlimited Data GX68 service.

U Mobile GX68 screenshot

According to U Mobile, they are aware of the Facebook post and it strongly refutes such claims while insisting that its new GX68 plan has no data quota limit and no speed caps. It added that customers can rest assured that its new postpaid plan is truly unlimited.

Commenting on the shared image, U Mobile says that it is from a 3rd party. The telco added that the number only represents a placeholder and it is not a reflection of what is actually being offered. As an introductory promo, the GX68 plan is currently going for RM58/month, which is RM10 off.

According to U Mobile’s T&C for Unlimited GX68, the plan is offered for smartphone usage and not for MiFi and USB dongles. When it comes to video, users can enjoy unlimited streaming in standard definition while Peer-to-Peer (P2P) usage is capped up to 64kbps.

It is also worth pointing out that a 50GB Fair Usage Policy was previously reported by Lowyat.NET for U Mobile’s Giler Unlimited GX30 and GX50 sometime in November last year. U Mobile had acknowledged there’s a FUP in place to tackle abuses but there’s no mention that the 50GB FUP is actually enforced.

[ UPDATE 15/02/2020 18:00 ] U Mobile has highlighted that the FUP for GX30 and GX50 have been removed.

Are you on any of U Mobile’s Giler Unlimited plans? Let us know your experience so far with the plan.

XOX to offer 4G and 5G phones with satellite connectivity very soon

$

Mobile Network Virtual Operator (MVNO), XOX has announced that they will be offering a range of 4G and 5G smartphones with satellite communication capabilities in the next nine months. The device bundle is offered in collaboration with AdvanceTC.

According to XOX, the first device to be introduced is the Xplore X5 which offers a combination of 18 4G LTE bands with Iridium satellite networks. It also has Digital Mobile Radio which allows short band two-way radio communications.

From the provided spec-sheet, the Xplore X5 features a 4.7″ Full HD IPS LCD display and it runs on an unspecified octa-core Snapdragon processor that has 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage.

For taking pictures, it gets a 12MP main camera that’s capable of recording 4K videos while the front gets a 16MP camera. Out of the box, the Xplore X5 is listed to run on Android 10 and guaranteed updates. In addition to its chunky rugged looks, the device also gets IP67-rated dust and water resistance.

Powering the device is a rather large 4,900mAh battery that supports Quick Charge 3.0. Strangely, it lists both MicroUSB and USB-C ports in the spec-sheet. Apart from voice calls via satellite, the phone also offers two-way messaging with location tracking via a Short Burst Data service.

XOX Executive Director, Steve Tan said, “Satellite network is the future of mobile communications and by working with a satellite phone provider that has proven themselves, we will be able to offer, truly global connectivity in a world that relies on real-time communication.” XOX aims to provide a unified network plan by integrating their prepaid plans and messaging platform with ATC’s extensive satellite emergency services. He added that XOX users can activate a satellite service as and when necessary whether it is for leisure at remote areas, for work purposes or during emergencies.

XOX didn’t provide any pricing for the device or rate plans for the satellite communication services but it claims to be innovating rapidly to provide affordable satellite smartphones for Malaysia and the region.

According to AdvanceTC Limited CEO, CP Loi, the seamless integration of 4G, 5G and space networks in an Android device will provide mobile operators and consumers a unique value proposition to increase network coverage, internet access and safety devices which aren’t possible with terrestrial networks. He added that Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellites are expected to become the most affordable internet connectivity solution for many remote areas. According to the CEO, there are 1,500 new LEO satellites being launched in 2020 and up to 12,000 satellites are expected to be deployed in the next few years.

AdvanceTC Group had previously launched its satellite phone in Malaysia with the Magic Xplore X7. The device was reported to be carrying a hefty RM4,128 price tag and was even offered on Indiegogo. At the time of writing, it appears that the Xplore X7 didn’t receive any backing on the crowdfunding platform.

Although satellite connectivity offers a significantly wider coverage compared to existing 4G and 5G networks, it usually isn’t feasible for the mass market. The devices are often bulky and expensive, making it suitable for very specific applications in remote areas. Even if they can bring down the price, there’s always the issue of latency which hampers the internet experience.

Maxis has just announced its Q4 2019 results which recorded a 14.7% increase in subscribers for postpaid and a 48% increase for its fibre broadband service. Overall service revenue has declined slightly by 2.7% from RM2.05 billion in Q4 2018 to RM1.99 billion in Q4 2019.

This is due to its decline in the wholesale business especially with the termination of U Mobile’s RAN sharing agreement with the green telco. For the full year, they have posted a slight 1.3% increase in revenue from RM9.19 billion in 2018 to RM9.31 billion in 2019.

Without the wholesale business, Maxis revenue has increased slightly by 2.5% and it is driven by its postpaid business which recorded RM989 million for the last quarter. Maxis has gained 432,000 postpaid subscribers and they have a total of 3.37 million subscribers on postpaid. According to Maxis, its Hotlink Postpaid Flex and MaxisONE Share offerings have attracted entry-level postpaid as well as prepaid customers. The ARPU (Average revenue per user) for postpaid continues to slide from RM96 in Q42018 to RM90 in Q42019.

However, when it comes to prepaid, Maxis has continued to show a consecutive decline and they have lost 383,000 users in the past year. They ended the year with 6.28 million prepaid customers. The decline of subscribers has also affected prepaid revenue with a 7.3% decline from RM845 million in Q42018 to RM783 million in Q42019, however, ARPU remains stable at RM42.

In terms of data usage, an average Maxis postpaid user consumes 15.4GB/month while Maxis prepaid customers are clocking 14.7GB/month in the last quarter.

Maxis has put a lot of focus into its fixed fibre business offering and they now have 369,000 customers. This includes 25,000 new subscribers that were added in Q42019. Maxis has reported RM104 million in revenue for its home-fibre business and it has an ARPU of RM109.

To expand its footprint, Maxis has partnered with multiple access providers which now includes TNB subsidiary, Allo as well as TM HSBB, SACOFA and Celcom Timur. In addition, they have also signed a strategic partnership with Astro for the cross-selling of Maxis Fibre and Astro TV which is said to be encouraging. At the moment, there’s an Astro TV + Maxis broadband combo that’s going for as low as RM99/month.

In terms of CAPEX, Maxis has spent RM1.2 billion into their network which is 16.9% more than in 2018. The telco is improving redundancy of its fibre networks for better 4G LTE capacity and to prepare itself for 5G deployment which is expected to take place in the second half of 2020.

COVID-19: Digi takes a different step to tell Malaysians to Stay at Home

Malaysia is currently under the Movement Control order which requires everyone to stay at home to curb the spread of COVID-19. However, there are still people that are ignorant and some were even spotted hanging out at eateries when it is prohibited to do so. After countless of announcements and SMS, Digi is doing something different to remind Malaysians to stay at home.

Digi Stay at Home operator name

If you’re a Digi user, you’ll probably notice something weird next to the signal bar. Early this morning, a lot of Digi users were surprised to see the operator label changed to “Stay-Home” instead of the usual “Digi”.

Digi stay at home

At the time of writing, Digi has already updated it to “Digi-Stay Home”. This is probably to reduce possible confusion from its users. Not to worry, your operator is still Digi and this is just a change of the operator label. At the moment, it appears that the label change is only applicable to iOS users as we can’t seem to get it on our Android phones.

[ UPDATE 20/3/20 10:40 ] The “Digi – Stay Home” label also appears on Android devices.

Digi is still operational as they are a telco which is categorised under essential services. To keep its employees safe, they have taken preventive measures such as organising team of employees to work from home and postponing large meetings and company events.

Thanks to our tipster for the heads up!

TM has introduced a special postpaid plan for students with its Unifi Mobile Student Pack. For RM59/month, the plan comes with unlimited calls, SMS and data, and there’s no upfront payment required.

The plan is actually quite similar to the RM99/month Unifi Mobile postpaid plan that is currently offered for RM59/month. It offers unlimited calls and SMS for domestic numbers and unlimited data.

The plan also comes with 10GB of hotspot data which is applicable for LTE coverage. If you need more, you can purchase a 2-hour hotspot pass for RM6 or 1GB hotspot at RM15. Unlike the consumer RM59/month plan, there’s no 12-month contract for the Student Pack.

To sign up, you’ll need to validate your student email which typically ends with “.edu.my”. TM will then send you an access code and you can use that to proceed with the sign up process. The Unifi Mobile SIM card will be delivered to your address within 1-5 working days. As always, TM recommends that you use a 4G smartphone that supports Band 5 (850MHz) for its network.

If you want to keep your existing number, you can do so by porting it to Unifi Mobile provided that you’ve settled your existing bill. It’s also stated that a CTOS credit check will be performed when you sign up for the plan.

According to the FAQ, the student only plan is offered for students studying at selected institutions of higher learning. Some of the eligible universities and institutions include UITM, UTeM, UM, UTM, UNIMAS, UniKL, OUM, UTP and Malaysian Flying Academy. You can check out the full list here.

The Unifi Mobile Student Pack is available starting today, 23rd April and you can sign up here.

With more Malaysians staying at home during the movement control order (MCO), telcos are experiencing a surge in data consumption as consumers rely on the internet more than ever. Maxis has assured that they are continuing its efforts to ensure that the connectivity lifeline remains uninterrupted as much as possible. In addition, they are also providing even more support for all employers, consumers and businesses throughout the MCO.

According to the green telco, data consumption is currently at unprecedented rates with home fibre traffic and daily mobile data volume has increased significantly since the start of the MCO on 18th March. Apart from data, there’s also an increased in voice call traffic on the first day of the MCO but it has since normalised to pre-MCO levels.

Morten Bangsgaard

Maxis CTO Morten Bangsgaard said its network technicians are working around the clock to monitor the internet traffic and to keep their fixed and mobile networks running healthily. The telco is making investments to strengthen its network performance and to increase capacity from their fibre partners and international internet gateways. Maxis is confident that its network BCP architecture is well-positioned to help navigate the challenging demands.

Maxis shared that internet browsing, video streaming, instant messaging and collaboration tools account for a bulk of the increase in data traffic. While mobile devices are mostly used for browsing activities, there’s an increase in data volume for streaming apps for home internet. They added that YouTube usage have increased by a few thousand TeraBytes while instant messaging and VoIP services have seen an increase of approximately 50% in data volume.

There’s also a significant increase in usage of collaboration tools such as Microsoft Teams, Skype and Google Hangouts which are heavily driven by users that work and study from home. Internally, Maxis conducts an average of 1,500 Teams meetings on a daily basis.

Maxis admits that some customers may not have an optimum internet experience on some occasional evenings. To mitigate the issue, they are increasing its sites upgrade production by 100% and they are also expediting capacity rollout in meeting the growing demands. According to Morten, they have 800 of their own people in the field serving customers in stores and field technicians keeping the network up and running. Maxis also encourages all members of the public to stay at home and stay connected during the MCO.

During the MCO, Maxis has introduced several initiatives including free 1GB data daily for its mobile users. Selected Maxis fibre broadband customers were given an optional free fibre speed upgrade up to 300Mbps for 1 to 2 months in the form of a bill rebate. Meanwhile, for new Maxis fibre signups, the telco is offering free unlimited 4G WiFi usage which allows customers to get connected immediately before the fibre connection is installed at their premises.
