Yes is offering the Galaxy S8 from RM1,899 on contract

$

0

Still scouting for other Galaxy S8/S8+ offers on a contract? Apart from the usual big 4 telcos, Yes is also offering pre-orders for the Galaxy S8 flagship duo and you can collect it as early as 4th May.

Similar to other telcos, the Galaxy S8/S8+ from Yes also gets the same pre-order freebies (worth over RM900) and it’s also tied with a 24-month contract. You can pick either the Postpaid 88 plan which comes with 25GB 4G LTE data at RM88/month or Postpaid 128 at RM128/month that has 35GB of 4G LTE data.

Both plans come with unlimited calls and SMS but unfortunately, it’s limited to Yes to Yes numbers. Calls to other networks would cost 9 sen/minute while SMS are charged at 9 sen each.

Another factor to consider is coverage as Yes operates on a pure 4G LTE network. If you’re outside their coverage areas especially in remote towns or the entire state of Sarawak, there’s no backup 2G/3G domestic roaming network to fall back on. You can check out their coverage areas here.

Below are the Galaxy S8/S8+ bundled pricing on Yes excluding the 6% GST:

Samsung Galaxy S8

Postpaid 88 (Upfront RM412)- RM2,299
Postpaid 128 (Upfront RM699)- RM1,899

Samsung Galaxy S8+

Postpaid 88 (Upfront RM612)- RM2,499
Postpaid 128 (Upfront RM772) – RM2,299

Do note that Yes would require an upfront payment plus 1 month advance subscription fee during the sign up. Once you’ve pre-ordered, you can pick up your unit from your prefered Yes Store beginning 4th May 2017, a day before its official nationwide release. Similar to other telcos, this pre-order promotion is valid for 3 days only between 11-13 April 2017.

To recap, the Galaxy S8 and S8+ are priced at RM3,299 and RM3,699 respectively. For Malaysia, both models are currently available in Midnight Black, Maple Gold and Orchid Gray.

U Mobile has introduced two new Hero Postpaid plans that offer unlimited calls plus bundled data. If the popular Hero Postpaid P70 plan that comes with unlimited calls and 15GB data at RM70/month is too much for you, these new plans are more affordable and they still offer unlimited calls to all networks.

The new Hero Postpaid P38 at RM38/month gives you unlimited calls and 4GB of data. It also comes with unlimited Waze, unlimited Music-Onz and unlimited App-Onz which gives you unlimited access to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. For SMS, they are charged at 3 sen to U Mobile numbers and 8 sen to other networks.

If you need slightly more data, U Mobile will also be introducing a higher Hero Postpaid P48 plan at RM48/month beginning 17 April 2017. This also comes with unlimited calls and with slightly more data at 5GB/month. In addition, you get extra 5GB of Video-Onz for video streaming as well as unlimited Waze, unlimited Music-Onz and unlimited App-Onz.

Take note that unlimited Music-Onz and App-Onz are offered as a limited time offer while Video-Onz is free until 31st December 2017.

Celcom makes it easy to share your postpaid data with GBshare

$

Celcom offers one of the biggest data quotas with its FIRST Postpaid plans. If you’re struggling to finish all that data on a single device, Celcom is now making it easier for you to share that data with its new GBshare Supplementary lines.

Applicable for Celcom FIRST Gold Plus (RM98/month) and FIRST Platinum (RM150/month) subscribers, Celcom GBshare costs RM48/month for each supplementary line. What you’ll get is unlimited calls, unlimited WhatsApp/WeChat plus 2GB additional data that’s added to your existing postpaid data quota. Meanwhile, SMS are charged at 20sen each.

For example, if you take up FIRST Gold Plus which comes with 40GB of data, two GBShare lines will give you a total of 44GB of data (40GB + 2GB + 2GB) which can be shared across 3 users. You can also control the allocation of data for each user using the MyCelcom Postpaid app.

So with 3 lines of 44GB to share, that calculates to RM64.60/month per month for each family member to enjoy unlimited calls and an average of 14.6GB data per user.

In a more stretched scenario, a FIRST Platinum subscriber can add 5 GBshare lines for a combined 70GB data per month. With a total cost of RM390/month, each line calculates to RM65/month with 11.6GB each.

GBshare does look similar to MaxisONE Share and overall it’s a huge improvement over its former FIRST 1+5 Supplementary offering.

The only downside is that Celcom requires you to take a minimum of 2 GBshare lines so you can’t just add-on a single GBshare line with your current FIRST Gold Plus and Platinum postpaid plan. There’s also a limit of 2 GBshare lines on FIRST Gold Plus and 5 GBshare lines on FIRST Platinum. Another benefit for GBshare is that Celcom will automatically combine both weekday and weekend data for greater simplicity.

For more info, visit Celcom’s GBshare page.

Xiaomi’s Mi Box is now available on contract when you sign up for Digi’s Broadband plans. Retailing at RM349, the Android TV-powered box can be yours at 48% off.

To recap, the Mi Box is an affordable set-top box that can push 4K UHD content at 60 fps with room to support HDR10 via a software update in future. It runs on a 2.0GHz quad-core processor with 2GB of RAM and 8GB of storage. At the back, it has an HDMI2.0a port, a USB 2.0 port (for storage expansion) and a SPDIF out / 3.5mm audio port. There’s no LAN but it supports dual-band WiFi up to 802.11ac and it comes with a voice-supported remote that connects via Bluetooth 4.0.

The Mi Box is available when you sign up for Digi Broadband 60 and 100 plan which comes with a total of 40GB and 100GB of internet respectively. On Digi Broadband 60 (RM60/month), you get 16GB of data, 8GB for on-demand channels (paid subscription platforms such as Netflix, iflix, dimsum) and 16GB for other free streaming services (such as YouTube, daily motion and digital radio). Meanwhile, on Digi Broadband 100, you get 40GB of data, 10GB for stream on demand and 50GB for stream free channels.

The Mi Box on Digi would cost RM15/month for 12 months. On Digi Broadband 60 it requires an upfront payment of RM60 during sign up and the upfront payment is waived if you’re on Digi Postpaid 100. As usual, you’ll need to pay 1-month advance subscription during registration.

Combine your Digi Postpaid 80 all-day and weekend data for RM5/month

$

0

If you’re looking for a postpaid plan under RM100, Digi’s Postpaid 80 hits the sweet spot by offering unlimited calls and 20GB for RM80/month. For those who use more data on the weekdays, the data split of 10GB for all-day and 10GB for weekends can be annoying.

Now Digi has an added option to give you more freedom to use your data. Similar to Celcom’s AnydayGB add-on, you can combine both all-day and weekend data for a small fee each month.

For an additional RM5/month, you can get 20GB for all-day usage. That’s good news for existing customers that find themselves finishing their all-day quota before their next billing cycle. The rest of the plan remains unchanged as it comes with unlimited calls and 300 SMS to all networks. Excess SMS are charged at 10 sen each and you can also carry forward up to 2GB of unused data to the following month.

If you travel a lot in Asia, you can add-on RM10/month for its Roam like Home add-on. This gives you 5GB of roaming data and 60 minutes of calls which can be used in Brunei, China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Myanmar, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand.

In case you missed it, Digi is also offering 2GB extra for 24/months if you subscribe to their Postpaid 80 plan online by 30 April 2017. For more info, visit Digi’s postpaid page.

Celcom discontinues its WiFiPlus service

$

As an added service for its customers, Celcom had rolled out a WiFi hotspot service called WiFiPlus at selected locations nationwide. Unfortunately, this service will be coming to an end as Celcom will be discontinuing its WiFiPlus offering on 16 May 2017.

The WiFiPlus service is currently offered for free to selected postpaid and Xpax prepaid customers with a data plan. It promises average speeds of up to 5Mbps and it is accessible with a username/password sent via SMS.

For those without a subscription, WiFiPlus costs RM2/day for 500MB, RM8/week for 2GB and RM18/month for 4GB. Availability of the service is rather scarce and I can’t recall stumbling upon a WiFiPlus hotspot at shopping centres. Even the coverage map locator isn’t particularly helpful.

As telcos are offering more data quota than before, it appears that there’s very little need for complimentary WiFi in this day and age. Maxis also had its own WiFi Hotspot service but it was also discontinued a while back. If you need connectivity for your laptop, using your phone’s hotspot feature is much faster and convenient.

Have you used Celcom’s WiFiPlus service? Let us know in the comments below.

U Mobile, the disruptive telco that’s known for incredible value for money has up the ante with a brand new unlimited plan. For those who want true unlimited data without costing a bomb, U Mobile wants to fulfil your needs with its new Unlimited HERO Postpaid P78.

The plan gives you unlimited calls to all networks and unlimited high-speed data for only RM78/month. While other telcos like webe and Digi had offered similar plans for around RM80/month, U Mobile’s offering is a bit more generous by offering more free hotspot quota and data roaming usage.

The P78 postpaid plan comes with 10GB data for hotspot use which is capped at 5Mbps. If you’re going on holiday or a business trip, Roam-Onz gives you free 5GB of data each month to stay connected in 12 countries. This includes Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Laos, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.

Roam-Onz is U Mobile’s new data roaming service which replaces their previous Data BackPack. Instead of using your home data without charge, Roam-Onz is additional data dedicated just for overseas use which is similar to Digi’s current “Roam like home“, but without the extra free calls.

Roam-Onz will also be available for postpaid customers on P70, P98, i90, i130, UD90, UD130, U Premium and U Platinum customers and it is valid from now until 31 December 2017. U Mobile customers are required to select the partner telcos manually. The Unlimited P78 plan is offered as a limited time promo and it will be available starting today.

UPDATE: The high-speed data on P78 is capped at 5Mbps and video streaming is also capped for 480p viewing similar to its current Video-ONZ offering. U Mobile has also blocked MiFi usage, so if you plan to share, you’ll have to use it on a smartphone with hotspot enabled.

UPDATE 2: Quota allocation from Roam-Onz has been revealed. For customers on the P70, P78, i90, Ultimate Device 90, and U Premium, you will be getting 5GB/month. If you’re on P98, i130, Ultimate Device 130, and U Platinum, you will receive 8GB/month.

This is Malaysia’s best UNLIMITED plan at only RM78/month

This post is brought to you by U Mobile.

Malaysian telcos are getting very generous when it comes to mobile data and it’s now a norm to get 20GB to 60GB these days. However, if you take a closer look at the fine print, these postpaid plans often come with strings attached like separate data quota for weekday and weekend, and having to pay extra to combine your unutilised weekend data. Why should you let your telco dictate what you can and can’t do with your smartphone?

Although these plans have more than enough data for most people but deep down you’ll know you won’t be fully satisfied unless it is truly unlimited. Some telcos had introduced postpaid plans with “unlimited” offerings but they can be quite expensive.

Unlimited experience for all

It is time to stop calculating your monthly GBs and enjoy true freedom with U Mobile’s Unlimited HERO Postpaid P78 plan. At only RM78/month, you get unlimited calls to all networks and true unlimited hi-speed data with no quota restrictions. This gives you total freedom to do whatever you want on your smartphone without worrying about running out of high-speed data.

If you need to share your data connection with your tablet or laptop, Unlimited HERO Postpaid P78 plan comes with not 1GB, but 10GB of free mobile hotspot data each month. For those who travel, you can stay connected for free as the plan comes with 5GB of Roam-Onz™ data that you can use in 12 destinations. This covers Australia, Bangladesh, Cambodia, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Laos, Philippines, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Thailand.

The best value for unlimited, hands down

As you can see from the above comparison, U Mobile’s Unlimited HERO Postpaid P78 plan gives you the best unlimited offering at the lowest price. It’s also the only unlimited postpaid plan available under RM100 that gives you 10GB for hotspot and 5GB for overseas usage with no extra charges.

When it comes to unlimited, the choice is clear

Your smartphone is a life companion and it deserves a plan with no limits. At RM78/month, now anyone can afford an unlimited plan at the price of a limited quota postpaid plan. Imagine being able to stream all your favourite videos, music and do everything you want without worrying about data caps. On top of that you get more data freedom to share via hotspot and to roam overseas.

To sign up, visit your nearest U Mobile outlet today. For existing subscribers, just call in at 018 388 1318 to make the switch. For more information, visit U Mobile’s Unlimited HERO Postpaid P78 page, http://u.com.my/unlimited

Digi new Family Postpaid Plan 2017

Digi has just announced its new Family Plans which now offer more data and it’s far less complicated than before. Designed for a family of 3 to 5 members, all lines will get unlimited calls and up to 120GB of shareable data.

There are just two options – a RM150 plan that comes with 2 free supplementary lines and a higher RM250 option with 4 free supplementary lines. Whichever option you pick, it will cost just RM50 per family member each month. The only difference is the amount of data where you get a shareable 60GB for Family 150 and 120GB for Family 250 which calculates to an average of 20GB/person and 24GB/person respectively.

All lines will get unlimited calls to all networks and 300 SMS per month. For the principal line, you’ll get free “Roam Like Home” where you get 5GB of data and 60 minutes of calls to use in 8 selected countries. Other family lines are able to subscribe to this roaming add-on at RM30/month.

However, do take note that Digi splits its data quota by weekday and weekend. So that means you’ll get 30GB of all-day data and 30GB of weekend data on Family 150 plan. The weekend data is applicable on either 4G/3G networks and you can utilise it fully on any weekend without restrictions.

If you need more data, you can top up 5GB for RM15 or 10GB at RM25. These shareable data top ups are valid for 30 days and you can share this with all family members. Like most family plans, the principal account holder can allocate the amount of data for each line through the myDigi app.

This offer is available for a limited time and you can only subscribe through their physical Digi Store. For extra savings, Digi is offering 5% off for the next 6 months if you enable auto billing via credit card.

As demand for mobile data increases, Celcom has introduced two big postpaid plans with up to 100GB of high-speed quota. If you use more than 40GB a month, Celcom FIRST Gold Supreme and FIRST Platinum Plus postpaid plans could just be the plan you’re looking for. On top of that, they are giving even more data just for video streaming.

The FIRST Gold Supreme at RM128/month gives you 50GB of high-speed quota and 25GB of Video Walla for all your streaming needs. As usual, the 50GB quota is split between 25GB for weekdays and 25GB for weekends. You do have the option to combine this quota with the AnydayGB add-on at RM10/month.

Voice calls to all networks are unlimited but SMS is still chargeable at 20 sen each. The plan also comes with free unlimited instant messaging on WhatsApp and WeChat.

If you have a huge appetite, FIRST Platinum Plus offers 100GB of high-speed data (Anyday) and another 100GB for Video Walla for RM188/month. Similar to its FIRST Platinum plan, it also gets unlimited voice calls and SMS to all networks. As a high spender, this plan also gives you access to its priority 1881 customer care line along with the priority to pick your preferred number.

It is interesting to point out that Celcom has slightly reduced the subscription fee for FIRST Platinum. Originally going for RM150/month, FIRST Platinum that comes with 60GB of data (30GB Weekday + 30GB Weekend) is now going for RM148/month. On top of that, Celcom is adding more value by including 30GB of Video Walla.

Digi Postpaid 100 Infinite

In conjunction with Malaysia Day, Digi is offering an affordable unlimited data and voice postpaid plan for 5 days only. If you missed the earlier Digi Postpaid 80 Infinite plan, you might want to get this offer while it is still available.

Similar to its previous Postpaid 80 Infinite plan, you get unlimited calls and unlimited data that’s capped at 5Mbps. Instead of RM80/month, this new Infinite 100 will cost you RM100/month.

For the extra price, Digi is offering more tethering at 20GB/month. As a comparison, the former Digi Postpaid 80 Infinite came with 5GB/month tethering that’s valid for the first 12 months. If you need more, you can top up 5GB for 30 days at RM10.

The plan also comes with 300 SMS each month to all networks and additional usage will be charged at 10 sen per SMS. If you travel a lot, there’s also a Roam like Home add-on where you can enjoy 5GB of data and 60 minutes of calls in 8 countries for an additional RM10/month.

According to the FAQ, you are required to place an upfront payment of RM200 which will be credited in your next postpaid bill. The Digi Postpaid 100 Infinite is only applicable for new registration, port-ins and pre to Postpaid conversion. If you’re already a Digi Postpaid customer, you can’t make the switch.

5Mbps is sufficient to enjoy high-quality video streaming on your mobile device. If you need faster and uncapped 4G speeds, Digi Postpaid 150 Infinite is still available and it comes with unlimited tethering at RM150/month. During sign up, Postpaid 150 Infinite requires an upfront payment of RM300.

As an added bonus, Digi is also giving away free Lazada voucher worth RM20 if you sign up for a new line or port-in from now until 30th September 2017. Take note that the Postpaid 100 Infinite plan is available until 16th September and it is exclusive to Digi’s online store.

MaxisONE Prime Family

With Malaysian families getting more connected than ever, Maxis has introduced an interesting new product that provides unlimited data for the entire household. With MaxisONE Prime, you can get a fixed fibre broadband plus mobile postpaid line which gives you unlimited calls, SMS and data which can be extended to 4 family members.

Maxis wants to be your end to end internet provider for both your home and while on the go. For its fixed home broadband which ranges from 30Mbps to 100Mbps, MaxisONE Prime users will get an additional 4G backup for seamless connectivity.  So if your Fibre service goes down, the router has a built-in 4G modem which will continue to provide your home with unlimited high-speed broadband with zero downtime. To ensure that your home broadband works with optimal performance, MaxisONE Prime customers will get free setup by the Maxperts team.

The MaxisONE Prime costs from RM367/month which comes with 30Mbps fibre and a single mobile line that provides you with unlimited calls, SMS and data. If you do the math, the RM367/month subscription fee is equivalent to subscribing a MaxisONE Home 30Mbps (RM179/month) broadband with a MaxisONE 188 Postpaid (RM188/month).

If you need more speed for your home broadband, upgrading to 50Mbps would cost you RM40/month extra (RM407) while 100Mbps costs RM120/month extra (RM487). Each supplementary mobile line costs RM48/month, which is similar to its current MaxisONE Share. Each supplementary line user will also get to enjoy the same unlimited calls, SMS and data perks as the main line.

When we asked about their Fair Usage Policy, Maxis reveals there’s one with 300GB per month but they do not impose any hard throttling on their MaxisONE Prime customers. If there’s data congestion on 4G, Maxis says that speeds would be reduced slightly (3-4Mbps) and it is still fast enough to provide standard definition video streaming. We are told that this slowdown would usually last for a few minutes, so it shouldn’t cause much impact to most customers.

On top of that, Maxis is also making it easier for families to get the latest smartphones and home lifestyle appliances. Maxis will be offering TVs, soundbars, Sony PlayStation and more with zero upfront and zero interest. For more info, visit their MaxisONE Prime page.

Mobile data has become more crucial for Malaysians. According to Maxis’ Q3 2017 report, an average Maxis customer uses an average of 7.5GB/month and over at East Malaysia (Sabah/Sarawak), it’s a staggering average of 12GB/month. They added that data traffic on their 4G LTE network has tripled over the past year and it is expected to rise even further.

When we spoke to their CTO a year ago, he mentioned that Malaysians are one of the highest data consumers in the world. In Q3 2016, an average Maxis customer consumes 4.3GB/month with subscribers at East Coast along with Sabah/Sarawak consuming 20-30% more data. With the current usage of 12GB/month in Sabah/Sarawak, looks like we’ve hit Ericsson’s South East Asia data estimates for 2022.

Maxis currently has a total of 10.1 million subscribers which is a slight dip from a year ago with 10.9 million subscribers in Q3 2016. Going into postpaid, they have increased their subscriber base from 2.678 million in Q3 2016 to 2.805 million in Q3 2017. Close to 2 million of their postpaid customers are already on their MaxisONE Postpaid plan.

Meanwhile, Maxis prepaid subscribers have dropped from 8.007 million users in Q3 2016 to 7.154 million users in Q3 2016. Despite that, they managed to double their Hotlink FAST customer base from 1.135 million to 2.23 million in one year.

For the first 9 months of the year, Maxis has invested RM647 million in their network and they currently have 89% 4G LTE population coverage nationwide. They also claim to have the highest network quality in the country as proven by many tests. With its network performance and improved customer service, Maxis also reported its highest customer satisfaction in Q3. They added that 90% of customer enquiries are addressed upon the first contact.

In terms of financials, Maxis has reported an operating profit of RM1.2 billion and profit after tax of RM562 million for Q3 2017. These are the highest recorded numbers for Maxis in more than 5 years. You can read the full Q3 2017 report here.
