Pre-orders are now open for the Galaxy S9 and S9+ in Malaysia, and if you prefer to get it on contract, both are now available on Maxis postpaid contract from as low as RM2,099. For those who prefer to get the device in monthly instalments and RM0 cash upfront, it’s also available on the Zerolution program from RM97/month.

On Maxis, they are only offering two models at the moment – the Galaxy S9 with 64GB of storage and the Galaxy S9+ with 128GB of storage. There are 3 colours available – Midnight Black, Coral Blue and Lilac Purple. Both devices are tied with a 24-month contract with either MaxisONE Plan 128, 158 and 188. Below is the price on contract.

Galaxy S9 64GB

Galaxy S9+ 128GB

Both devices would require an upfront payment of RM516 (MaxisONE 128), RM834 (MaxisONE 158) or RM954 (MaxisONE 188) which wil be used to rebate your upcoming bills. However, if you’re a loyal Maxis customer with good payment records, this upfront payment will be waived and you can check your eligibility when you’re logged in to the online store with your MaxisID.

For those who don’t want to spend money upfront, there’s Maxis Zerolution. It’s also available on MaxisONE 128, 158 and 188, and below are the monthly instalments.

Galaxy S9 64GB on Zerolution

Galaxy S9+ 128GB on Zerolution

To swap your smartphone each year, you would need to top up RM44/month for the Zerolution upgrade fee. When compared to the standard contract plans, the cost of ownership is higher if you calculate the total amount paid for 24-months. It is still recommended to go for the standard contract plans for greater savings.

The Galaxy S9 and S9+ pre-order is running from now until 4th March 2018 and they are bundling a free Harman Kardon Bluetooth wireless speaker while stocks last. The Galaxy S9 64GB is officially priced at RM3,299, while the Galaxy S9+ 128GB version is going for RM3,999. For more info, visit the Maxis Galaxy S9/S9+ pre-order page.

Unifi Mobile Teacher Mobile Plan

TM has just announced a special Unifi Mobile package for teachers which will provide them with unlimited data, calls and SMS. This Unifi Mobile “Jasa Pack” is introduced as part of TM’s partnership with the Ministry of Education to embark on a digital education transformation initiative.

The plan costs RM59/month and according to TheStar, it is available at TM Points nationwide. The offer is exclusive to teachers and based on the launch slides, those who wish to apply would require a confirmation letter from the school’s principal or from the state education department. TM is also offering a free smartphone for the first 2,000 subscribers.

TM Chairman, Tan Sri Dr Sulaiman Mahbob said that the collaboration would ensure effective delivery of the Digital Education Transformation programme in line with the government’s National Transformation 2050 (TN50) plan. Apart from the mobile plan, the long-term partnership between TM and the MOE will enable the ministry to accelerate digital transformation which includes high-speed broadband connectivity, interactive smartboard, smart devices as well as 21st-century teaching and learning.

For regular consumers, there’s only one Unifi Mobile option which is basically a hybrid prepaid plan that has no expiry on credit. The SIM cards are given out for free and it comes pre-loaded with 10GB of LTE data. You can learn more in our previous post on Unifi Mobile.

UPDATE: Pek Jasa plan requires a Home broadband plan which starts from RM99.

TM has finally published its Pek Jasa product page and eligible teachers would need to sign up for a Unifi Home broadband plan if they wish to sign up for the RM59/month unlimited Unifi Mobile plan.

The Lite 10Mbps plan costs RM99/month while the Advance 30Mbps plan costs RM169/month. Meanwhile, the fastest Pro 100Mbps option is going for RM299/month. This pricing is valid only for the first 24 months before it returns back to the original pricing of RM129/month (10Mbps), RM199/month (30Mbps) and RM329/month (100Mbps).

If your location does not have Unifi, you’re able to subscribe to TM Broadband (Streamyx) in order to qualify for this plan. The Pek Jasa promotion is available from today until 31 December 2018.

The Unifi Mobile Jasa Pek also supports hotspot and TM provides 10GB of LTE data each month which you can connect up to 5 devices. They also offer a hotspot pass of RM6.36 (inclusive of GST) for 2 hours of usage.

Xpax is introducing postpaid plans from RM50/month

Xpax Postpaid Malaysia

Nope, you didn’t read that wrong. Xpax, the prepaid brand under Celcom is introducing its first ever postpaid plans. At first, we thought this could be a direct response to Hotlink’s postpaid Flex plan, but they are actually aimed at data-centric users.

The plans aren’t officially announced yet but from the information we gathered so far, it looks like they are targeted for those aged 25 and below. There are two options – Xpax XP50 and XP79.

For RM50/month, XP50 gives you 15GB of data and unlimited calls to 5 friends on the Celcom network. On top of that, you get unlimited hi-speed late night data for YouTube between 1AM to 7AM. There’s also unlimited Music Walla for music streaming and free iflix premium access. On your birthday, you also get free 100GB of Super Video Walla which is used for video streaming.

The highest offering is XP79 at RM79/month. This plan gives you 22.5GB of high-speed data plus 15GB of free video walla. The rest of the plan is similar to XP50 and you also get unlimited YouTube between 1AM to 7AM, unlimited music streaming and free iflix premium.

For excess usage, these Xpax Postpaid plans charge 30 sen/min for voice calls and 15 sen per SMS.

Looking at the slide above that was obtained by Amanz, it looks like they are offering smartphone bundles with a 24-month contract. From the table, surprisingly you get less data if you sign up for the plan with a device.

If we compare these new postpaid with Xpax’s existing RM50/month and RM79/month prepaid data plans, you get the same amount of data if you’re aged 25 and below with its KAWKAW offering. The only differences are unlimited free calls to 5 numbers on Celcom and unlimited data for YouTube after midnight. However, you do lose out on the free 10GB Facebook and 10GB Instagram data that’s currently offered on prepaid.

If you’re going to spend RM79/month on a postpaid, you probably might want to consider Celcom’s FIRST Gold plan at RM80/month. It comes with 10GB (weekday) + 10GB (weekend) data plus 30GB of Video Walla. On top of that, you also get unlimited calls to all networks, which I think is a better deal. Xpax says that these plans give you “XACTLY” what you want & more. What do you think?

Xpax is expected to launch these postpaid plans next week but they are already live on the online store. You can check out the XP50 Postpaid and XP79 Postpaid pages.

maxis FamilyRoam data calls sms

A family that travels together stays together. If you’re traveling overseas, Maxis is now offering unlimited roaming for your entire family with its new Maxis FamilyRoam pass. Essentially, you only need to pay the cost of roaming for one person and all lines under your account will get to enjoy the same roaming perks for data, calls and SMS.

This FamilyRoam Pass is applicable for subscribers that are on MaxisONE Plan 98, 128, 158 and 188 (including MaxisONE Sabah/Sarawak Plans) and MaxisONE 4G Combo 148/198 that has MaxisONE Share lines under them. At RM38/day, this is similar to its current MaxisONE World but it’s now extended to your supplementary lines that are on the RM48/month MaxisONE Share.

Each line will get 500MB of roaming data as well as unlimited calls and SMS. Once your 500MB data is finished, you can still continue surfing at high-speed as subsequent usage will draw from your domestic data quota. The unlimited calls cover both incoming and outgoing calls via direct dialing or Roam 120 codes to any country. Just make sure you’re connected to Maxis’ preferred partner telco.

In terms of availability, it is only applicable in 9 countries at the moment, namely Brunei, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Laos, Cambodia, the Philippines, Vietnam and Myanmar. All pass expires at 11:59PM of the capital time of the country you’re in. To be considered as “part of the family”, the principal and supplementary lines must share the same DataPool under the MaxisONE postpaid.

To activate, just switch on data roaming on your phone and you’re good to go. There’s no manual activation process required. Anyone in the family can start roaming and it could be initiated by the principal line or one of its supplementary users. The RM38/day will be charged to the first person that activates.

According to the FAQ, if the principal holder is currently on the RM1 roaming promo, the supplementary lines can still enjoy the FamilyPass at RM38/day (charged separately). It’s also possible for all supplementary lines to enjoy FamilyRoam even if the principal holder isn’t traveling with them but do note that one FamilyPass is only applicable for the same country. For more info, check out the Maxis FamilyRoam page.

Celcom lets you rent an iPhone X at RM99/month

iPhone X Malaysia Rent Celcom

Celcom has just revamped its EasyPhone instalment program and they claim to offer the most flexible smartphone offering in Malaysia. Apart from having low monthly payments, Celcom is also giving you the option to rent a smartphone from as little as RM35/month.

On a typical EasyPhone program, it is basically a 24-month easy payment plan and you get to keep the device at the end of your tenure. Now they are giving you the extra option to upgrade at any time, which is what they had offered previously with Celcom NewPhone. Celcom has added that there’s no credit card required, so you don’t have to worry about locking down your card’s credit limit.

Since most users would change their smartphones every two years, Celcom is introducing a new rental option which is the first of its kind for a Malaysian telco.

The iPhone X on a normal EasyPhone plan costs RM137/month but you can rent it for RM99/month. This calculates to RM912 worth of savings across 24 months. Meanwhile, the iPhone 8 costs RM55/month to rent versus RM82/month to own.

You can also rent a Galaxy S9 at RM79/month, a Huawei P20 at RM52/month and vivo V9 at RM35/month. Obviously, the price difference would greater on a more expensive phone and you must get it with an applicable Celcom Mobile postpaid plan.

If you do change your mind, you can keep the device for a one-off fee. Celcom also encourages customers to add the optional Phone Care for a hassle-free swap or replacement if anything goes wrong. At the end of the rental period, the device must be returned in good condition and we are told that it’s still acceptable if it has normal wear and tear.

The new EasyPhone will be available starting 1 June 2018 and they will share more details on their website later.

Celcom introduces a new Mobile Family Plan with 1TB of video streaming data

Apart from introducing its new EasyPhone, Celcom has also revamped its family postpaid plan offering. The latest supplementary add-on is called Celcom Mobile Family Plan and it has more data and flexibility than the previous GBshare.

Each line still costs RM48/month and it comes with 5GB of data which can be shared with the entire family, 5GB of Video Walla for video streaming, unlimited calls to all networks, unlimited WhatsApp & WeChat and Unlimited iflix VIP access. Unlike GBShare which requires a minimum subscription of 2 lines, you can add-on as little as one Celcom Mobile Family Plan to your existing postpaid plan.

For Celcom Mobile Gold Plus (40GB), you can register up to 2 lines, while Gold Supreme (50GB) principal holders can sign up to 3 lines. Platinum (60GB) subscribers can add on up to 4, while the highest Platinum Plus (100GB) can sign up to 5 lines. Data on the family plan can be used at any time of the day as there’s no weekday or weekend quota split.

In a maximum configuration, you can get 125GB of shareable data for 6 people at RM428/month. That’s equivalent to RM71.30 per person per month and each will get an average of 20.83GB. Similar to GBshare, you can manage your shared data quota among your family lines via the Celcom Life app.

To sweeten the deal, Celcom is providing 1TB of shareable Video Walla for 12 months. For those who are not familiar, Video Walla is a separate data quota that you can use to stream YouTube, iflix, Netflix, Tonton, Astro Go, Dimsum, MOX and Daily Motion.

Celcom is also extending the EasyPhone device instalment program for supplementary line holders. You can own a Huawei P20 for RM112/month or rent it for RM103/month across 24-months.

For greater savings, you can enjoy RM300 discount for every Celcom Mobile Family Plan. For example, the iPhone 8 costs RM1,748 on contract but it can be yours for only RM248 if you have 5 Mobile Family Plan lines with you.

In case you didn’t notice, the blue telco has rebranded its Celcom FIRST postpaid to Celcom Mobile. The plan itself remains unchanged. This new Family Plan will be available from 1 June 2018 and more details will be published later on Celcom’s website.

After introducing four new consumer mobile postpaid plans on Unifi, TM has just revealed its mobile postpaid options for business users. There are currently a total of four options and it starts from RM39/month.

There are two fixed quota and two unlimited quota options. For lite users, the Unifi Mobile Biz 39 at RM39/month comes with 5GB of data (4GB LTE + 1GB 3G/LTE), 50 minutes of calls and 25 SMS. If you need more, the RM59/month plan gives you double the quota with 10GB (9GB LTE + 1GB 3G/LTE) data and 100 minutes of voice calls, however, SMS remains at 25 SMS.

The pricing for the unlimited plan is dependent on the number of lines you apply. If you’re getting for less than 5 lines, it will cost you RM99/month for unlimited voice, sms and data. For businesses that subscribe to 5 lines and above, you can enjoy the same perks at RM79/month per line. Essentially, you’re getting RM20 off per line if you sign up with a minimum of 5 lines in a single account.

For the non-unlimited plan, Unifi Mobile is also offering add-on options for data, calls and SMS. Do note that the plans come with complimentary 10GB of LTE hotspot data. In case you’re wondering, these business postpaid plans are not tied with any contract.

According to the FAQ, customers are encouraged to use an LTE smartphone that supports Band 5 (850MHz). It also mentions that customers that are found making more than 2,000 minutes of calls and/or using more than 5GB of data on a non-LTE device will be subjected to their fair usage policy.

Previously, U Mobile had a 3G RAN sharing agreement with Maxis which allowed the telco to rapidly increase its 3G footprint throughout the country. The telco had announced its intention to stop this RAN sharing agreement sometime in 2017 and they had embarked on an aggressive network exercise to build their own 4G LTE network.

With this new upgrade, U Mobile customers can enjoy seamless unlimited connectivity in more places than before. They have reported a 114% growth in 4G sites in Negeri Sembilan, 186% growth for Perak and 96% growth in Johor. U Mobile also claims to cover 98% of the population with 4G in Penang and Melaka, while Perlis has a 90% population coverage.

U Mobile also says that they are expanding their network for Sabah and Sarawak, and they will end their RAN sharing agreement for East Malaysia by June 2019. We are told that U Mobile has already ended their RAN share arrangement in West Malaysia.

When asked about network performance, U Mobile’s CTO, Woon Ooi Yuen, told us that the telco isn’t shouting much about speed, however, customers should experience an average speed between 10Mbps to 30Mbps. U Mobile is focused on providing more 4G coverage with higher throughput. This will enable a seamless experience with fewer interruptions for unlimited data users.

The network improvement exercise doesn’t end here. The CTO also told us that the telco is aiming to add 1,000 new LTE sites by end of this year and they are constantly increasing capacity to fulfil the demand of users. Indoor coverage is also a key focused and they are looking into improving its signal strength in shopping malls, hospitals and commercial buildings. At the moment, an average U Mobile subscriber utilises an average of 13GB of data each month.

U Mobile is also refarming part of its existing 3G spectrum especially the higher 2100MHz band for 4G use while maintaining 900MHz for 3G. U Mobile is also retaining its nationwide 2G domestic roaming arrangement with Maxis which provides wider coverage for calls and SMS nationwide.

The telco is confident in their network that they are currently offering a 7-day network trial for free. You can try by putting a RM99 deposit and if you’re not satisfied, you can get your money back. You can port in your number after the trial period and U Mobile is offering a RM120 rebate (RM10 x 12 months) for port-in customers.

If you’re travelling overseas during the upcoming Kaataman, Gawai and Hari Raya week, Celcom has just introduced a new roaming pass for short term travel in 40 countries. For RM88, you can get data, calls and SMS overseas for 3 days.

This new pass is an affordable alternative to its current 7 day 3-in-1 roaming pass. The RM88 3-day pass gives you 1.5GB of data to use overseas and 100 minutes of calls which you can use for both incoming and outgoing calls. In addition, the pass also provides you with 100 SMS which you can send to Malaysia or within the roaming country.

According to the FAQ, you can still continue to stay connected after you’ve depleted the 1.5GB quota but speeds will be throttled to 64kbps. To regain full speed, you can purchase 500MB extra data at RM38 or 1GB for RM58. This plan is applicable in over 40 countries which include Australia, China, India, Indonesia, New Zealand, Singapore, United Kingdom and Australia.

To activate the pass, you can dial *118# and select Roaming and IDD, or you can purchase directly from the Celcom Life App. Overall, it is cheaper than buying a daily RM38 data roaming pass that comes with 500MB of quota but it isn’t as attractive as Digi’s RM25 roaming pass for 3 days.

Interestingly, the FAQ states that you’ll be charged RM88 per 3 days even if you travel to multiple countries within the 3 days validity. This allows you to stay connected during flight transits at no extra cost, provided that the country in the supported list.

Before you purchase the pass, do note that the pass expires at 11:59pm Malaysian Time on the 3rd day of the subscription. For more info, you can check out Celcom’s roaming page and its FAQ.

When it comes to new smartphones on contract, the bundled device offers are normally limited to principal postpaid accounts only. Now Maxis wants to make it easier for the entire family to enjoy the latest smartphones as you can now purchase new devices for every supplementary line.

The Zerolution device instalment program is now available to all MaxisONE Share Line users and Maxis says this is the first for a family postpaid plan in Malaysia. On the highest MaxisONE Plan 188 postpaid plan, customers are eligible to sign up for four share lines, and this means you can purchase up to 5 smartphones on contract under a single account.

The MaxisONE Share line costs RM48/month per line and it was recently upgraded with 20GB of data. It consists of 10GB that can be shared with the family’s DataPool and another 10GB all-day data which is allocated only for the supplementary user. The Share Line also comes with unlimited calls and data. If you want unlimited data for all lines, you can step up to the MaxisONE Prime, which is essentially a mobile postpaid + home fibre broadband bundle.

Maxis offers a variety of devices for MaxisONE Share subscribers which include Apple, Samsung, Huawei, Black Shark, Vivo and Xiaomi. The iPhone XS 64GB is going for RM208/month while the Galaxy S10+ 128GB is going for RM132/month. The device instalment amount is definitely higher than a typical MaxisONE 98 plan Zerolution bundle, but the total monthly cost is lower since the subscription fee for each line is just RM48/month.

With Zerolution, there’s no upfront payment and all you’ll need to pay is the monthly device instalment and subscription fee for a period of 24 months. You can check out the full list of available devices for MaxisONE Share subscribers here.
